Students in educational leadership courses (future administrators) may use video production for one of three purposes:
- Learning: Students learn both by using video tools and from the video’s content (8).
- Research: Students progress through three steps (pre-production, production, post-production) when creating documentaries (11-13).
- Evaluation/Promotion: Technology allows video evaluation as a formative (beginning) rather than summative (end) assessment. This may include participation from the subject, giving him/her a voice in the evaluation (15). Video is also useful when promoting a program or honoring “service to the profession” (16).
Administrators are frequently called upon to speak and/or present during public meetings. With current budget shortfalls, it would behoove administrators to produce memorable videos when requesting funds from city leaders, for example. As the article suggests, using social media to convey school news would increase community outreach and, possibly, support for schools. Today’s administrators need technological skills in order to be proficient in their jobs. As I discovered when curating people and organizations to follow on Twitter, many administrators already have a social presence. I wonder how many possess and use video production tools?
